Erythropoietin Receptor (EpoR)

Erythropoietin Receptor; EpoR

Erythropoietin receptor (EpoR) is a receptor present on erythroid progenitor cells, belonging to the type I cytokine receptor family and characterized by a single transmembrane domain. When EpoR binds to erythropoietin (EPO), it effectively inhibits cell apoptosis and stimulates the production of red blood cells.
Activation of EpoR leads to the activation of downstream intracellular signaling pathways, including the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt) pathway, the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway, and the signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) pathway.
In erythroid lineage cells, the expression of EpoR is crucial for the normal development of mammals. Furthermore, EpoR plays a pivotal role in the complex cascade responses to acute and chronic hypoxic injuries in the body, particularly within the cardiovascular system. EpoR has driven research into the beneficial effects of erythropoietin in various diseases, primarily cardiovascular diseases[1].
